Snapchat’s My Story feature is a fun tool. And it’s even more fun when you actually use it to tell stories.
That’s our strategy in the Drake University School of Journalism and Mass Commmunications (follow drakejmc on Snapchat). We use the tool to tell stories that have a beginning, middle and end. We also like to use as many of the available Snapchat tools as we can: video, photos, emojis, drawing and text.
Here’s an example.
Here’s the template we use to plan our stories. Click here to download the Snapchat storytelling template as a PDF.
The circles in the upper-right of each rectangle allow you to plan how long you will show each Snap. We’ve found that you should show them for a shorter amount of time than you think. Two or three seconds tends to be long enough for most of them.
The right side includes a list of all emojis available on iPhones, so you can plan which ones will work well with your story. And the top reminds you of some tools and techniques you should be using.
