As more readers turn to mobile devices for their news coverage, I decided to take a look at how some of the biggest news sites covered election day on their mobile sites.
Wall Street Journal
The Journal has impressive coverage on its desktop page, with a live election video show and a box dedicated to live election updates. But the mobile site was pretty much a dud. A large map was too wide for the mobile site, and simply took me to the desktop site when clicked.
USA Today
Nothing special on the mobile site. Just articles. One of them was nicely updated through the night with breaking news on the GOP race to win back the House. But overall, not much effort went into USA Today’s mobile site.
New York Times
Apparently the Times got the memo that there was an election tonight. The home page had a graphic charting the race for the House and Senate. And an impressive mobile app let you easily track races across the nation.
Los Angeles Times
The mobile site wouldn’t even load. Too much traffic? It appears that all Tribune Company mobile web sites are down.
Washington Post
Mainly a feed of stories and blog posts here, but the state-by-state results page (linked from the yellow bar across the top of the page) gave me easy access to results from my state.
CNN
CNN gave me impressive, comprehensive coverage on its mobile site. The Election Center allows me to input my zip code and see results from my area. The mobile site also gave me access to an election night live blog. Short of live video, this site seemed to have it all.
