MLB teams on Instagram

The Major League Baseball playoffs begin next week with the AL and NL wild card games on Tuesday and Wednesday. But two teams are already winning one MLB race – the race to grow the biggest following on Instagram.

The New York Yankees lead the way with just over 1 million Instagram followers. The Los Angeles Dodgers are second with more than 968,000 followers.

To compare, the Yankees have 1.5 million followers on Twitter and nearly 8.5 million on Facebook.

Instagram is a photo- and video-based social networks that is growing in popularity – it finished second only to Snapchat in my recent poll of first-year college students’ social media preferences.

The San Francisco Giants are third with 757,000 followers. The Boston Red Sox are the only other team with more than 500,000 followers – with just over 539,000.

The average MLB team has 384,639 Instagram followers as of Sept. 30, 2015. The official Instagram account of Major League Baseball is closing in on 2 million followers – currently with 1,947,899.

Of the seven teams that have already clinched a spot in the 2015 playoffs, the team with the lowest number of followers is the Chicago Cubs – with 307,000.

The Minnesota Twins have the least number of followers of any team in the league – with just under 134,000.
