Today marks the start of a new semester at Drake University, so I thought I would check in with my Digital Media Strategies class about how they are using Instagram and how they feel about some social networks in general.

This is a follow-up to the social media survey I give to first-year students in their first week of college in the fall.

Today’s survey went to students ranging from freshmen to seniors. The majority of the class have a major in journalism, advertising, public relations or political communication.

Here’s what I found:

  • Instagram is their favorite social network, but they don’t post content there very often.
  • One-third of them spend more than 40 minutes a day on Instagram
  • Instagram is their social network of choice, beating Snapchat
